Star Grocery
Star Grocery is one of the few remaining old-fashioned owner-operated groceries in Northern California. It has gone through a number of incarnations, and the present is surely one of the best.
The produce section is small, but top notch throughout. Short of Monterey Market or Berkeley Bowl, you won’t do any better than this for quality. Eggplant is an acid test; here it is fresh, therefore usable, just about 100% of the time.
The meat and deli section was sub-par for a while, but some months ago came under new management and is now among the best in town.
For general groceries, whether hamburger buns, tomato sauce, or orange juice, the quality invariably seems a cut above Safeway. Acme bread is featured.
One of the charms of the place is its openness to new ideas. It seems that there is always something new to try, from one or another of the little enterprises that keep springing up around Berkeley. We first saw Sconehenge muffins here, some time before they began appearing at Andronico’s and elsewhere.
