Berkeley Horticultural Nursery
Founded in 1922, this has acquired a sort of
institutional status in North Berkeley. Unlike many institutions, it is not
riding on past glory but seems to be improving all the time.
The grounds are large, on the same scale as East Bay.
Yet it is pleasant to stroll here, along curved gravel paths. Always you seem to
see friends standing around and chatting on the grounds.
It now has a Tropical Court, gracious under arched
glass.
A greenhouse is devoted to houseplants.
The staff knows about everything you need to know.
There is also a newsletter, informative and also
entertaining. A recent issue carried advice on jackaranda trees and roses. There
was an hilarious column by Dr. Chlorophyll. The newsletter is posted online, so
check it out.
