To start this page we asked Frank Jaffe, a
popular free-lance gardener for many homes in Berkeley, which nurseries
he liked. He said that he uses four: Magic Gardens, East Bay Nursery,
Westbrae, and Berkeley Horticultural.
We list these four below, with summaries of
their own self-descriptions.
Please send us your comments.

Magic Gardens Nursery
This nursery has one of the state's largest
selections of sun and shade perennials.
It owns and operates a large propagation
facility in Richmond which constantly develops varieties suitable for
the Bay Area's Mediterranean climate (arid summers and seasonal
rainfall).
It has moved from Berkeley (October 2001), but is
still only four miles away, and is four times larger . . .
Berkeley Horticultural Nursery
Founded in 1922, this has acquired a sort of
institutional status in North Berkeley. Unlike many institutions, it is
not riding on past glory but seems to be improving all the time . . .
Westbrae Nursery
This is relatively small in scale, but has
several features that make it interesting nevertheless.
It is very pleasant to stroll through here . .
.
East
Bay Nursery
A great diversity is one attraction here. If
your neighborhood nursery doesn’t have something, chances are it can
be found at East Bay.
Founded in 1926 . . .
