Berkeley Food Page
Star Grocery
Star Grocery is one of the few remaining
old-fashioned owner-operated groceries in Northern California. It has
gone through a number of incarnations, and the present is surely one of
the best.
The produce section is small, but top
notch throughout . . .
Hopkins Street
The block of Hopkins Street sandwiched
between Monterey Market and Berkeley Horticultural Nursery (see
Gardening Section) has a number of exceptionally interesting food shops.
The street parking is easy during the week, but
difficult on Saturday. However, you can generally find a place a block
and a half away on one of the side streets north of Hopkins. The shops
listed below are all closed Sunday, as is Monterey Market. Only Berkeley
Hort remains alive that day.
Magnani Poultry
A wide variety of chickens, whole or in parts,
is only the beginning here. They also have a small selection of
high-quality meats, a wide variety of chicken sausages, and other
sausages. They offer fully roasted chickens all day long.
Above all, they have duck legs! . . .
Hopkins Street Bakery
A full line of breads, sweet rolls, cookies,
muffins, and desserts are offered, all baked on the premises.
The items here satisfy the sweet tooth, while
seeming to be generally healthy and nourishing . . .
Coffee Market
This store presents teas, coffees, cheeses,
jams, jellies, and all the crackers you will ever need.
Cheeses are a main attraction. These are of
similar quality to the famous Cheeseboard, without the wait at the
counter . . .
Monterey Market
Monterey Market and Berkeley Bowl are the two
major vegetable markets in Berkeley, presenting a vast array of food
from local growers, outside the supermarket distribution system.
Monterey Market seems back on track now . . .
Country Cheese Company
This is off the beaten track, not as well known
as it deserves to be. Cheese is only a small part of what it offers.
Fine quality is coupled with low prices. Below are some items that our
staff has bought there: Calamata olives, pitted(!)
