Don't settle for second-rate coffee
Coffee is another area, like dried herbs and spices, where we have
the world at our finger tips. Through catalogs and the Web, the busy
home cook can order the very best . When you brew coffee in your home
there is no need, ever, to settle for anything less than
perfection.
The argument can be made that most home cooks are better off ordering
coffee routinely by mail. For a long time, in our household, we did not
appreciate this. We live a three-minute walk from the original Peet's,
and it's always seemed easiest just to go to the store.
But those were pre-Web days. Now Peet's has its catalog online, and
what a super job they've done. All their coffees are fully described. As
you browse through the online catalog, you can't help but get an
education in coffee. (Don't look for coffee flavored with such as
vanilla, hazelnuts, or chocolate raspberry, however. This is real
coffee, by and for real coffee people.)
True enough, Peet's has a descriptive folder in each store. But
somehow, we never looked at it that much. And, of course the folder
can't be up to the minute on late shipments.
Peet's is only one of a number of websites. In general, we now think
that if you look at coffee through the web, you will see much in the
coffee world that you never knew before.
