Picnic Page

We are used to matching wine to meal. This page will match your picnic menu to the car that you drive to the picnic.

Send in your nominations to specialfavors@141.com.  Please include at least an indication as why the menu is suitable to the car.

Honda Civic

You don't need an SUV to have a cook-out on the beach. This menu and gear can be transported in a Honda Civic or other smallish car to any beach.

Take along a small hibachi (about one foot square) loaded with charcoal which is soaked in lighter fluid. On this cook hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken legs or anything you like cooked over charcoal. Add condiments, potato salad, celery sticks, blue cheese dip, appropriate buns or bread. Ethnic cooking first hand!

Before you go home dump the hot coals on the sand.  DO NOT BURY THEM!  They
should be in plain sight so that no one steps on them in bare feet.

Rolls Royce

Have your chauffer-cook prepare an uncomplicated menu, such as suggested by Alice Waters in Chez Panisse Menu Cookbook: Charcoal-Grilled Chicken Wings with Lemon and Pepper, Goat Cheese and Lentil Salad, Fennel and Red Onion Salad Vinaigrette, Pears with Nicoise Olives, Radishes and Sweet Butter, Baguettes, and Pat's Biscotti.

This menu should be served on a folding table, set on a level part of the beach and covered with a white tablecloth.

When it seems that your car is in the shop most of the time

Take along some cold Chicken with Rosemary and Lemon. This can be made the night before.
Serve with lemonade, then lemon Jell-O for dessert.
Before leaving home, spray some Love's Fresh Lemon under your ears.

Variation
If your car is expensive, substitute lemon chiffon pie for the Jell-O, and French cologne with a light lemon scent for Love's Fresh Lemon. The Chicken with Rosemary and Lemon, simple but sophisticated, is suitable for a wide range of occasions, and need not be modified here.

More on Picnics . . .

Steven Everett has produced a guide to picnic products. This is more than a catalog. It discusses what to look for when you buy a picnic basket, backpack, or a wheeled tote. He also provides a history of picnics.                                                                                                                                                                        If I know our viewers, many will be attracted by Steven's unheroic Romantic Picnic in Bed.             Picnic Portal
